Unlocking the Secrets of the Cosmos: Support the Cascadia Meteorite Laboratory
Meteorites are time capsules from space—clues to the origins of our planet, our solar system and even the building blocks of life. At Portland State’s Cascadia Meteorite Laboratory (CML), we bring these extraterrestrial visitors down to Earth, offering students hands-on experience in planetary science while advancing groundbreaking research. Your support can fuel discoveries that shape our understanding of the universe.
What Your Gift Can Do:
- $45 can cover an hour of scanning electron microscope time, helping students analyze meteorite composition at an atomic level.
- $65 can create a thin section of a meteorite—an essential step in identifying and classifying new cosmic specimens.
CML is one of the few university-based meteorite research labs in the country, and our work is powered by donors like you.
Beyond the lab, CML is dedicated to education and outreach. We mentor students, engage with teachers and the public, and curate an expanding collection of meteorites that enrich scientific understanding.
The Cascadia Meteorite Laboratory Fund can provide support for;
- Small student research projects on meteorites--involving high school, undergraduate, and graduate students
- Meteorite classification--involving use of analytical equipment and creation of thin sections
- Small but interesting research projects that are not funded by government grants--these often serve as pilot projects for grant proposals
- Day-to-day operating expenses and supplies for the Cascadia Meteorite Laboratory
By making a gift today, you can help the next generation of scientists explore the cosmos—one meteorite at a time.
