At the PSU Smallwood Food Pantry, we serve the student population by providing supplemental groceries at no cost to them. Currently, 54% of Portland State Students are reporting being food insecure. For some of our student communities, that number is as high as 80 percent.
At the PSU Smallwood Food Pantry, we are seeing the number of students utilizing our services climb each term. In Fall 2024, we had over 12,000 visits to the pantry, and the Winter 2025 visits are up 33 percent. We are on track to distribute over half a million pounds of food this year.
Currently, the bulk of our food comes directly from Oregon Food Bank and is supplemented by community partners. We focus on providing protein rich brain foods that help our students set themselves up for success! With the resources available to the pantry through our partnership with Oregon Food Bank, we are able to stretch a dollar to be up to $30 worth of purchasing power.
However, with the rising cost of groceries, every dollar in this campaign counts to keep food on our shelves and subsequently, on our student’s tables. With your help, we can continue to purchase fresh produce and staple ingredients.
